Big Red rally falls short at Kenyon

Box Score

GAMBIER, Ohio – Despite finishing the game on a 10-0 scoring run, Denison's late second-half comeback fell short on Saturday afternoon as they suffered a 60-59 loss at Kenyon College in Gambier.

After the first 26 minutes of action were home to a tightly contested affair featuring 11 different lead changes, the final portion of play resulted in a game of runs that first belonged to the hometown Lords.

With 14:14 to play in the game, Kenyon's Ugnius Zilinskas buried a pair of free throws that put Kenyon ahead 37-36 and eventually became the final lead change of the day. Over the next 4:31, the Lords turned in a 15-4 scoring run led by seven points from Alex Cate and a three from Kamal Aubakirov to build their lead to 52-40.

Trailing the Lords by double-digits with less than four minutes remaining, the Big Red began to turn the tide when sophomore Freeman Brou cashed in both of his attempts at the charity stripe and trimmed the DU deficit to nine, 60-51.

On their next three possessions, senior Jack Coulter continued the Big Red comeback with back-to-back free throws and consecutive three-pointers that cut the Kenyon lead to one, 60-59, with 2:31 to play.

With the score remaining at 60-59 entering the closing seconds, the Lords looked to end the game on a three-pointer from Carter Powell with eight seconds to go, but the missed shot landed in the hands of Brou forcing a Denison timeout and giving the Big Red one last chance to win the game.

On the inbound with two seconds to play, DU's Will Hunter attempted a shot at the buzzer, but the Big Red were unable to convert as they suffered their fifth loss of the season. Kenyon moved to 4-3 overall so far in 2019-20.

Coulter led the game with 17 points on 5-of-10 from three while adding two rebounds and a steal. Kevin Cheng tallied 7-of-8 from the charity stripe on his way to 11 points and Brou finished with a double-double on 10 points and 14 boards.

Zilinskas finished with 11 points and eight rebounds to lead Kenyon. Aubakirov and Cate each added nine points off the bench.

Denison will return home on Saturday, Dec. 14 when they host Wabash at 2 p.m. from Livingston Gymnasium.
