Box Score GRANVILLE, Ohio – Wabash's Jack Davidson finished with a game-high 23 points as the Little Giants handed the Big Red a 75-65 loss on Saturday afternoon at Livingston Gymnasium in Granville.
In a game that saw both sides combine for 64 shots from the perimeter, Wabash opened the first five minutes of the game with a 16-4 scoring run that was fueled by a quartet of three-pointers, including back-to-back threes from Davidson.
Following a Denison timeout, junior Ben Stern connected on five-straight points to trim the DU deficit to 16-9. Stern's offensive spark flipped the script for Denison as Nate Haller, Jack Coulter, Will Hunter, and Matt Gerics helped ignite DU's own 16-4 scoring run that tied the game at 20-20 with 9:07 to play in the first half.
Tied at 29-29 with 2:04 to play in the first, Stern broke the tie with a jumper to give Denison the lead, but Wabash followed with a 9-0 scoring run to end the half after Davidson and Connor Rotterman combined for eight points to give the Little Giants a 38-31 lead at the break.
The scoring run continued for WC to open the second half with seven-straight points from Davidson, Tyler Watson, and Harrison Hallstrom as the Big Red deficit built to 14, 45-31, with 18:11 remaining in the game.
Leading by as many as 19 points in the second half, Wabash allowed eight-consecutive points to the Big Red, including a three-point play the old fashion way from Freeman Brou that dropped the Little Giant advantage to 60-49.
With less than a minute to play, the Big Red dropped their deficit to as little as seven following a three from Coulter, but the Little Giants buried 9-of-11 free throws to end the game, including 6-of-7 from Davidson as Denison suffered their sixth loss of the season. Wabash improved to 6-3 overall.
Davidson added four assists and three rebounds to his 23 points on 5-of-9 from three. Kellen Schreiber (15), Watson (14), and Hallstrom (10) also finished in double figures for Wabash.
Kevin Cheng led DU with 14 points on 6-of-14 from the field. Conor Fenton and Brou added 10 points each while Fenton chipped in 12 boards for a double-double.
Denison will return to action next Saturday-Sunday, Dec. 21-22 when they travel to Santa Cruz, Calif. for the two-day UC Santa Cruz Holiday Classic. The Big Red will play UCSC on Saturday at 1 p.m. PST before matching up with Whittier College at the same time on Sunday.
