Box Score GRANVILLE, Ohio-- Eighth-ranked Denison University defeated Hiram College 19-0 in a game that was delayed and finally shortened due to severe thunderstorms in the area.
After a one-hour weather delay to start the game the two teams played nearly 14 minutes of the opening quarter that saw the Big Red jump out to a 9-0 lead. With 1:19 to play in the first period, lighting was spotted and the two teams were forced to clear the field. A one hour and 45-minute weather delay ensued. At 10:05 p.m. both teams took the field and resumed play, forgoing halftime and breaks between quarters.
In the second quarter, Denison built its lead to 15-0 after goals from Peter Pittroff, Chris Haimbaugh, Tucker Root, Ian Crosby and Ryan Kirkpatrick.
The third quarter saw DU tack on four more behind goals from long pole Tommy McMaster, Sam Fiedorek, Luke Elder and Devin Irvin.
Spencer Butler led Denison in scoring with three goals and two assists on five shots. Brooks Davy scored four goals while Pittroff followed with one goal and two assists. Wills Hutras, Root and Crosby tallied one goal and one assist and Henry DeCamp led the team in ground balls with five while going 9-for-9 on faceoffs.
Denison outshot the Terriers 51-5 while piling up 43 ground balls in just three-quarters of action. Stephen Paras got the start in goal and finished with two saves in one quarter of action. Cole Poyfair and Reeves McKenney played the second and third quarters, respectively.
The Big Red improves to 9-2 while Hiram drops to 5-5. Denison will travel to Oberlin on Saturday (April 7) for a 2:30 p.m. faceoff against the Yeomen.
