Late offense pushes Denison past Heidelberg, 9-1

Box Score

TIFFIN, Ohio--  Denison improved to 23-7 after a 9-1 regional victory over Heidelberg on Wednesday afternoon.

Rookie hurler Taylor Perrett pitched 6.1 innings in a game that was nip and tuck until the Big Red's bats awoke in the seventh and eighth innings.  Perrett scattered three hits and allowed only one run while striking out three as he moved to 6-2 on the year.

Denison tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second when Nick Pettigrew poked a single through the left side of the infield that scored Jack Blanchard.

The game remained 1-1 until the top of the seventh inning.  Senior second baseman Noah Hahn broke the tie with a double to the gap in left-center, scoring Pettigrew from first base.  Grady Paine followed with a double, scoring Hahn.  He later came around to score on consecutive passed balls by the Heidelberg catcher.

Denison entered the eighth leading 4-1 and came out of the half inning on top 8-1 thanks to a bases-loaded RBI single by Hahn, an error that scored Vince Walker from third and a sacrifice fly by Sam Frazen that scored Pettigrew.

DU relievers Mikey Rivera and Andrew Bruss finished off the game with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Heidelberg's Cameron Deemer took the loss and dropped to 5-5 on the year.

Pettigrew was 4-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and two runs scored.  Will Krushena was 3-for-5 with a run scored and Hahn led the team in RBIs with two while going 2-for-4.  Tanner Johnson also extended his hitting streak to 21 games, tying Derek Johnson '01 for the second-longest streak in program history.
