Box Score GRANVILLE, Ohio-- Twelve players accounted for 18 goals as the third-ranked Denison Big Red defeated Albion College, 18-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Piper Stadium. With the win, Denison improves to 4-0 on the season.
The Big Red asserted themselves quickly against the Britons, scoring five goals in the first seven minutes of the contest. Junior attackman Spencer Butler scored four goals in the opening period, helping Denison to a 7-0 lead after one.
In the second quarter, Chris Haimbaugh posted a hat trick while Josh Happ, Jake Waxter, and Brant Pittman all got in the act. Three Denison first-year's, Christopher Laethem, Ian Crosby and Ryan Kirkpatrick scored their first collegiate goals.
Albion committed 13 turnovers in the first half and struggled when clearing the ball. All-American defenseman Ben Duhoski posted three caused turnovers, four ground balls and his first goal of the season after a failed clear and turnover in the first quarter. Will Tully also finished with three caused turnovers for the DU defense.
Butler ended the day with four goals and one assist. Peter Pittroff, who was just named to the USILA Team of the Week for the second consecutive week, tallied three assists. Haimbaugh scored three times and finished with five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore goalie Cole Poyfair played all 60 minutes and ended the day with three saves while facing only four shots on goal.
Henry DeCamp was 13-of-15 when facing off. He paced the squad with seven ground balls.
Denison outshot Albion 49-16 and was 3-for-6 in extra-man. The Big Red dominated ground balls 57-25.
Denison returns to action on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they host DePauw University.
