Denison sophomore Naomi Clayton led the way on Sunday by placing fifth on the 1-meter board at the 2018 NCAA Division III Region 1 Diving Championship at the University of Chicago. Clayton's fifth-place showing allowed her to reach unofficial alternate status on the 1-meter board at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships. After a second-place finish on the 3-meter board on Friday, DU sophomore Allison Fitzgerald has unofficially qualified for nationals for the second-straight year. Official diving selections will be announced by the NCAA on Monday.
Clayton's best dive came on her fifth attempt, an inward 1 ½ somersault tuck (403C) that resulted in a 47.30. She connected on her 11th and final dive for a 46.00 to end with a score of 395.70.
Emma Weber followed in eighth place for Denison with an 11-dive score of 382.20 that featured three dives of 42+ points.
Fitzgerald placed 11th out of 22 on the 1-meter board with a score of 369.00. At last year's Division III championships, Fitzgerald placed seventh on the 1-meter board and was ninth on the 3-meter.
