Pittroff's goal sends Big Red past Stevenson

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md.—Peter Pittroff's goal with eight seconds left in regulation sent No. 4 Denison to an 11-10 win over No. 15 Stevenson on Sunday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.  The win moves Denison to 2-0, while Stevenson drops to 0-1.

With just over six minutes left in the game, Denison took a 10-8 lead after Pittroff faked right and rolled left, one step inside GLE. He uncorked a shot that hit nylon to put the Big Red up by two.

Stevenson responded with a goal from Ethan Christiansen at the doorstep off a quick feed from JT Thelen at X.  A violation on the ensuing faceoff gave the ball back to the Big Red.  Clinging to a one-goal lead, Denison took about two minutes off the clock and avoided having the 30-second shot clock turned on by attempting three shots during the possession.  Brooks Davy, who already had three goals, put his shot off the crossbar but a teammate was there to back-up to retain possession.

Stevenson got the ball back after Pittroff's shot was saved at point-blank range by Sam Ross.  The Mustangs quickly cleared and one minute into the possession, Christenson utilized a high screen to break free from the Denison long pole.  One he had space he fired a shot from five yards away that tied the game at 10-10.

The ensuing faceoff provided some great drama as the ball remained free for over 15 seconds.  It was knocked near the sideline before Denison FOGO Henry DeCamp was able to scoop up the ground ball with a minute to play.

That's when Denison got into their offense, eventually letting Pittroff snipe the game-winner from 10-yards away.

Pittroff finished with three goals and three assists on four shots.  Davy also notched a hat trick. He led all players with 13 shots.  As a team, Denison outshot the Mustangs 33-27. Both teams were 11-for-22 at the faceoff X and Stevenson won the turnover battle, 26-22.

Backing up Pittroff and Davy were Sam Asman (2 goals, 2 assists), Spencer Butler (1 goal, 1 assist), Jake Waxter (1 goal) and Owen Armstrong (1 goal).

DeCamp posted six ground balls and 11 faceoff wins.  Butler also added three ground balls and two caused turnovers.  DU goalie Cole Poyfair recorded five saves while his counterpart, Ross, finished with 10 saves.

Both squads scored a pair of extra-man goals.  Denison was 2-for-3 in man-up while Stevenson was 2-for-6.

Stevenson was led offensively by Thelen's two goals and four assists.  Jacob Tatum led the scoring with four goals.

Denison (2-0) returns to action next Sunday (March 4), when they host 18th ranked Roanoke at 1 p.m. at Piper Stadium.
