#10 Big Red pulls away from Wittenberg

Box Score

GRANVILLE, Ohio--  No. 10 Denison won their seventh straight game as they dispatched visiting Wittenberg University, 18-10 at Piper Stadium.

The Tigers made a statement early, opening up a 4-1 lead in the first seven minutes of the contest.  Denison answered with four-straight goals to take a 5-4 lead with two minutes to play in the first.  Denison's Will Donohue scored a pair of man-up goals after Wittenberg's Brent Whitehead was flagged for a two-minute non-releasable penalty after an illegal body check.

In the first quarter, Wittenberg was penalized three times and the Big Red was 3-for-3 in man-up.  The Tigers did get on the board with 39 seconds left in the first as Michael Coyle tied the game at 5-5.

Things calmed down in the second quarter as the Denison defense clamped down and held Wittenberg scoreless.  In fact, the Tigers would not score again until the 2:56 mark in the third quarter.  During that span, the Big Red opened up a 13-5 lead.

Attackmen Liam Rooney and Donohue had great chemistry on offense as the pair combined to account for 17 points in the game.  Donohue led all scorers with six goals and three assists on eight shots.  Rooney notched a hat trick and had five assists, running his season total for assists to 34.  Rooney is just one goal shy of 100 career goals.  Only two players in Denison lacrosse history have scored 100 career goals and 100 career assists (Dave Baxter '81, Sean O'Brien '01).

Denison held a 41-31 advantage in shots while winning the ground ball game, 44-31.  Henry DeCamp was 21-of-28 when facing off.  He finished with eight ground balls.  Josh Happ led the way with nine ground balls while Teddy Sawyer posted four caused turnovers and six ground balls.

Rounding out the scoring for Denison was Spencer Butler (3 goals, 1 assist), Jake Waxter (2 goals, 1 assist), Owen Armstrong (1 goal, 1 assist), Alex Paulus (1 goal) and Jamie McCahan (1 goal).

Stephen Paras recorded five saves in 55 minutes.  Will Nabors finished out the final five minutes and posted one save for Denison.  Wittenberg's Colin Cahill had seven saves for the Tigers.

Denison moves to 7-1 and 2-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Wittenberg drops to 5-4 and 2-1 in conference play.
