DELAWARE, Ohio -- The 34th-ranked Big Red men's tennis team handed Ohio Wesleyan University a 6-3 loss on Tuesday at Gordon Field House.
Denison held a 2-1 match lead at the completion of doubles play. The top-doubles pairing of Kevin Brown and Blake Burstein knocked off Shouta Fukamachi and Diego Venegas, 8-5, to even their record at 3-3. At the second flight, Jamie McDonald and Owen Smith cruised to an 8-2 decision over Aadil Kohari and Jacob Volbers for their fifth win as a team. OWU avoided the sweep with a 9-8 (7-5) win at third doubles.
The Big Red took four of the sixth singles flights to secure the win. Brown and Smith both won in straight sets at first and third singles, respectively. Brown took down Venegas 6-0, 6-3, while Smith bested Pako Alevizopoulos 6-1, 6-2. McDonald and Colin Bahin both rallied for three-set wins. After dropping a 6-1 decision, McDonald defeated Fukamachi in consecutive sets 6-4, 6-2 for the win. Bahin lost a closer first set to Kohari (7-5) before winning the next two via 6-3 and 6-4 scores.
With the win, DU improves to 3-6 on the year while the loss drops the Bishops to 10-4. Denison will be back in action next Monday (March 27) when they host 31st-ranked Lewis & Clark at 4:30 p.m.
