Box Score No. 4 William Smith College got a hat trick from senior Kara Shue. That propelled the Herons past Denison, 3-1, in the final match of the William Smith Invitational in Geneva, N.Y.
Shue put the Herons on the scoreboard first when she accepted a pass from Ella McMackin and slid a low roller past the diving Denison goalkeeper. Seven minutes later, Denison's Grace Murray tied the match at 1-1 by firing a strike from the left side of the box. The assist went to Phoebe Gilbert.
The tie was short-lived as Shue broke through the Denison defense for a one-on-one goal just 46 seconds after Murray provided the equalizer.
One of Denison's best scoring chances in the second half came with 18:29 remaining. After a William Smith foul, Denison's Drew Wentzel sent a free kick into the box where it was received by Ashlyn Flaherty. Her shot from 8-yards was blocked and cleared by a Heron defender.
The score remained 2-1 in favor of William Smith until the 80th minute when Shue banged in a cross from Brie Ruane, setting the final at 3-1.
The Herons held a 13-5 advantage in shots. Denison goalkeeper Jenny Herold ended with three saves. Her counterpart, Kaileen Murray, finished with one save.
William Smith improves to 3-0 while Denison drops to 0-2. The Big Red will try and bounce back this Wednesday when they host Otterbein University at 6:30 p.m. inside Piper Stadium.
