Big Red closes out homestand with 2-2 tie

Box Score

GRANVILLE -- After combining for four first-half goals, Denison and John Carroll went scoreless over the final 62 minutes which resulted in a 2-2 draw at Piper Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Big Red needed just 28 seconds to open the scoring. After settling a deflection off her own thrown in, junior defender Allison Vilsack blasted a shot from 23 yards out that found the upper right corner of the goal. The junior's first career goal marked the fastest score by a Big Red player since 2001 when Denison Hall of Famer Dana Grandmaison scored 38 seconds into a 2-0 victory over Allegheny (Oct. 24, 2001).

DU doubled their lead in the 19th minute when senior Jacquie Graham picked up her fifth goal of the season. Junior Grace Murray snuck a through ball to Graham who lifted a shot over a charging Rhianna Guarnera at 18:35.

The Blue Streaks cut the deficit in half two minutes later when Jaclyn Audino scored from the top of the box, while a Katie O'Donnell score in the 28th minute tied the match at 2-2. O'Donnell's second goal of the year came off an assist from Lexie Keller. John Carroll nearly grabbed their first lead of the match in the 52nd minute, but a diving stop by Big Red keeper Jenny Herold on an Audino attempt kept the score tied.

Denison had two solid scoring opportunities in a four-minute span. Graham almost had the go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute, but her header went just over the crossbar. In the 76th minute, Graham drew a foul five yards outside the box that set up a 23-yard free kick. Junior Drew Wentzel ripped a shot towards the right post that was punched away by Guarnera.

The Big Red attempted the only two shots of overtime, both of which came in the second extra stanza. In the 104th minute, sophomore Maggie Armstrong pushed a one timer just wide of the goal from the top of the 18-yard box. Senior Anne Denz followed that up with a header that sailed over the bar in the 106th minute.

Denison outshot the Blue Streaks 17-9, which included a 9-6 edge in shots on frame. The Big Red also outcornered JCU 9-1. Herold finished with four saves for DU, while Guarnera had seven stops in goal for John Carroll.

The Big Red moves to 2-3-3 on the year, while the Blue Streaks are now 3-3-2. Denison will hit the road for the first time in three weeks when they travel to Delaware, Ohio for their North Coast Athletic Conference opener. Kick off at Ohio Wesleyan is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
