Flaherty's goal forces draw with #5 Centre

Box Score

GRANVILLE-- Senior Ashlyn Flaherty's goal in the 87th minute forced overtime and eventually resulted in a 2-2 draw between Denison and fifth-ranked Centre College.

Denison senior Anne Denz had arguably the best to scoring opportunities of the opening 46 minutes. In the 12th minute, Jessica Skelly sent a long through ball to her classmate. Denz settled the pass and ripped a shot from the right side that forced Colonel goalie Olivia Alford to punch the ball over the crossbar. Forty-three seconds into the second period, the senior had a similar opportunity from 12 yards out that resulted in another save over the crossbar.

The Big Red finally broke the scoreless tie in the 50th minute off the foot of junior Grace Murray. Meg Wozniak got the play started at midfield when she threaded a pass down the left side to Denz. The Wheaton, Illinois native took the ball down to the end line before sending a cross that looked like it was intended for fellow senior Jacquie Graham. However, the pass went by Graham and found Murray who buried a shot into the wide-open net from point blank range.

Centre's leading scorer, Destinie Graves tied the game with a header off a 48-yard free kick by Tori Dillard in the 63rd minute. The Colonels grabbed the first lead of the match at 79:51 when Graves fed Alana Hughes for her second score of the season.

With time winding down, Denison threw everything they had at Centre. Murray tried to pick up her second tally of the contest, but her attempt was blocked aside. In the midst of trying to clear the ball, Flaherty forced a turnover at the top of the 18-yard box and blasted a missile into the upper left corner. The senior's second goal of 2016 tied the match at 86:21.

Centre tried to retaliate quickly, but Maddy Coleman's entry pass to Meghan Paynter was intercepted by DU keeper Jenny Herold. The most dangerous scoring chance of overtime came early in the second OT session when Alford came off her line to break up a play. The loose ball found its way to Denz, but a partial deflection on the shot attempt allowed Alford to get back and make the stop.

The Colonels held a 21-14 advantage in shots, but the Big Red put 11 of their attempts on frame compared to six by the visitors. The two teams combined for seven offsides and seven corner kicks in 110 minutes. Herold finished with four saves, while Alford made nine stops.

Denison moves to 2-3-2 on the year, while Centre now sits at 6-0-2. The Big Red wraps up its six-game homestand on Wednesday against John Carroll. Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m.
