Offense shines in shutout of Carleton

Box Score

The Denison women's soccer team erupted for six goals en route to shutting out Carleton on Saturday afternoon at Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio.

The Big Red attack came out firing on all cylinders, scoring a goal on each of their first three shots and four times on their first six attempts. The senior class made their presence known in the first five minutes as they accounted for all three of the goals during that span. Jacquie Graham got things started with her second tally of the season just 43 seconds into the match off a feed from classmate Anne Denz.

One minute and 10 seconds later, Graham found the back of the net once again after settling a failed clear and depositing a shot into the lower left corner of the goal. Just past the five minute mark, Denz netted her second goal of 2016. Senior defender Meg Sutter sent in a ball from the right side line that deflected off Graham right to Denz. The senior forward took one touch and buried a cross-goal shot from roughly 10 yards out.

Junior Meg Wozniak extended DU's lead in the 20th minute when she took a through ball from Maggie Armstrong and found an opening in the lower right 90. The goal was Wozniak's first of the season, while collected her second assist of the year.

Much like the first half, the Denison offense pressured the Knights early in the second period. That pressure resulted in a foul in the box drawn by Grace Murray who had a clear-cut breakaway halted by the infraction. Junior defender Drew Wentzel stepped up to bury the PK attempt 14 seconds into the half, giving the home team a 5-0 advantage. Murray set the final score in the 58th minute when she took a pass from Armstrong, sprinted past her defender and scored in the lower right corner from short range.

The Big Red outshot Carleton 18-2 which included a 12-1 advantage in shots on frame. Denison attempted four of the game's five corner kicks, while Carleton was flagged for offsides twice. DU keeper Jenny Herold made one stop in 80+ minutes, while senior Isabel Mularoni closed out the final 9:36. Elaine Sundberg collected six saves for the Knights in 90 minutes of action.

With the win, Denison improves to 2-2, while Carleton falls to 0-4-1. The Big Red continues their homestand on Sunday (Sept. 11) when they host Salisbury (1-0-1) at 12 p.m.
