Box Score Thomas Crillio's goal 37 seconds into overtime pushed No. 3 Salisbury to an 11-10 victory over No. 6 Denison in the quarterfinals of the 2016 NCAA Division III Tournament. The Seagulls advance to the NCAA Semifinals on Sunday while Denison's season comes to an end with a final record of 18-2.
Trailing 10-8 with just over four minutes to play, Denison found itself in familiar territory. Just weeks earlier, the Big Red scored five goals over the final five minutes to erase a four-goal deficit against rival Ohio Wesleyan. A similar comeback was necessary against the Seagulls.
With 3:32 left in the game, Liam Rooney scored on a diving sidearm shot to make it a 10-9 game. Salisbury won the faceoff and took control on offense. With 1:20 left, the officials called for the 30-second shot clock to be instituted. The Denison defense was stout, forcing the shot clock to expire, giving the ball back to the Big Red with 52 seconds left.
With 24 seconds to go, Rooney fed Blair Farinholt who was camped out 15-yards from the goal. Farinholt's ripper got by Colin Reymann, sending the game into overtime.
To start the overtime period, Salisbury gained possession of the opening faceoff after an interference call on the Big Red. Less than a minute later, Crillio broke the hearts of the Big Red faithful from 12-yards away.
We showed a lot of heart, a lot of grit and a lot of determination to come back and tie the game," said Denison head coach Mike Caravana. "We feel like we are one of the better teams in the country. To be 18-2 and lose both games by a goal, it's disappointing for us because we expect to be successful no matter who we play."
Denison was outshot 39-26 and Salisbury controlled possession by winning 17-of-24 faceoffs. Despite the gap on the stat sheet, Denison kept pace with the Seagulls every step of the way.
There appeared to be some first quarter jitters for both squads as Denison and Salisbury combined for 14 turnovers in the opening 15 minutes of play. Despite the turnovers, it was a pair of rookies that put the Big Red on the scoreboard as Owen Armstrong hung the first number on the board with 10:10 to play off a pass from Chris Haimbaugh just seconds after stepping on the field with the second-line midfield.
Five minutes later, Jake Waxter absorbed a multitude of hits from Seagull poles only to roll, shoot and score, putting Denison back on top, 2-1. Salisbury answered 30 seconds later with a left-handed shot by Brendan Bromwell, tying the game at 2-2.
In the second, Denison drew the first EMO of the contest but Alex Paulus' shot banged off the pipe. Four minutes later, Waxter scored his second goal by running head-on at Reymann. With 5:45 left in the first half, Rooney bodied up a Salisbury defenseman and scored, giving DU a 4-2 advantage.
Salisbury responded with 2:32 left as James Burton's shot slipped by Thomas. With 1:11 left, Salisbury's Nathan Blondino had a nice shot turned away by Thomas. The Big Red netminder finished with five saves in the first half of play.
Fifty-one seconds into the second half, Salisbury tied the game at 4-4 when James Burton found nylon after a Big Red turnover. That sparked a 3-0 run by the Seagulls, giving them their first lead of the game at 6-4. After regaining possession on a faceoff violation, Farinholt utilized the cage for a wrap-around goal, making the score 6-5 in favor of the home team.
With 5:30 left in the third, Rooney rolled and scored in traffic, tying the game at 6-6. Salisbury responded with its second 3-0 run of the quarter thanks to goals from Carson Kalama, Christian Ottenritter and Blondino on a fantastic crossing feed from Burton.
Denison gained possession in the closing seconds of the quarter. Just before the final horn sounded, Waxter uncorked the lacrosse equivalent of a half-court desperation heave, giving the Big Red some momentum heading into the fourth.
Denison goalie Chris Thomas was outstanding, finishing with 13 saves powered by four in each of the final three quarters. Senior Eric Baumgardner won seven faceoffs and finished with one ground ball. He leaves DU as the program's all-time leader in ground balls with 369.
Rooney led DU with four goals and one assist. Waxter followed with a hat trick while Farinholt scored a pair of goals. Armstrong scored once and Haimbaugh added an assist.
"This is great for the guys who are out there scoring goals and causing turnovers, but it starts with the guys in practice and the young guys who give us looks all week," said Farinholt. "I think we just have a good full team and that's what made this team special. We have some young guys coming up through the ranks and I wouldn't be surprised to see them back here next year.
