Box Score 2 Tyler Shook pitched seven scoreless and allowed just one run, leading Wooster to a 6-1 win over Denison in game five of the 2016 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.
With the loss, Denison is eliminated from tournament play. Wooster advances to Saturday where they will face DePauw for the conference tournament crown. Denison staved off elimination in game four with a 9-3 win over Ohio Wesleyan.
A four-run first inning gave Shook a nice cushion before taking the field. Jamie Lackner's base hit down the third base line scored Gilmore, who reached first on a throwing error. A bloop double by Drew Tornow down the left field line plated Ryan Ostendorf and Lackner with the third and fourth runs in the frame.
Shook's no-hit bid was spoiled in the sixth when Brandon Morgan singled up the middle leading off the inning. In the eighth, consecutive walks to Eric Zmuda and Evan Flax gave DU some life. Wooster went to the bullpen, inserting Zach Woullard who retired Jack Blanchard before loading the bases after another single by Morgan.
The Big Red sensed an opportunity was looming and if Sam Frazen's fly ball to left field had just a little more air underneath it this game could have had a much different ending. Instead, Frazen's fly ball was caught by Tornow with his back against the outfield wall. It did score Zmuda on the sacrifice fly, resulting in Denison's lone run.
In the ninth, Tanner Johnson drew a leadoff walk and was stranded at third after Zmuda's groundout to shortstop ended the game.
In Denison's first elimination game of the day against Ohio Wesleyan, they rode starting pitcher Perley Provost to the 9-3 win, keeping themselves alive for at least a few more hours.
Provost had a shutout until the ninth when the Battling Bishops scored all three of their runs with two outs in the inning. Provost scattered eight hits and three runs while walking five. He struck out three improving to 6-2 on the season.
Denison scored three runs in the second via a two-run double by Blanchard and an RBI ground out by Frazen. They added two more in the third and two in the fourth to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
Blanchard was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and one run scored. Flax was 2-for-3 with two walks, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Denison's bows out of the NCAC Tournament with a record of 27-14. The 27 wins are tied for the third-most in program history. It matches the win total of Denison's 2008 squad and is four wins shy of the high-water mark set in 2003 and 2004.
