Box Score The Denison pitching staff tossed a four-hit shutout in the Big Red's 7-0 victory at Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday in Berea, Ohio.
The DU pitching trio of sophomore Perley Provost, freshman Mikey Rivera and junior Connor Hanrahan limited the Yellow Jacket offense to just four hits across nine innings of work while striking out 12 batters. Provost carried a perfect game through his three innings of work, striking out five of the nine batters he faced. Additionally, eight of the batters he faced didn't get the ball out of the infield.
Rivera scattered two hits and struck out four in innings four, five and sixth while Hanrahan also surrendered two hits and fanned three en route to earning the three-inning save. The save was the fifth of the junior's career. Provost (1-1) earned his second career win in his first collegiate start.
The Big Red offense backed the strong pitching performance with four runs in the first three innings. After drawing a walk to open the second inning, junior Eric Zmuda came around to score the game's first run on a double down the left line by senior Duncan Moran. DU tacked on three more runs in the third. Sophomore Jack Blanchard drove in junior Noah Hahn while Zmuda also scored on the play thanks to an error in left field. Blanchard later scored the third run of the inning on a base hit to left by Sam Frazen.
Denison added to its lead in the sixth when Zmuda drove in Evan Flax with a two-out single to right. The final runs of the game came in the top of the ninth. Blanchard singled in pinch runner Nick Pettigrew, while Phil Papaioannou knocked in Blanchard with a base hit to left.
Moran finished 3-for-4 with three doubles and an RBI, while Blanchard recorded two hits, drove in a pair, scored twice and swiped a base. Zmuda also touched the dish twice and plated a run.
Denison improved to 11-5, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 8-14. The Big Red will open North Coast Athletic Conference West Division play this weekend when they host DePauw University. Denison kicks off the four-game series this Saturday with a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
