DU moves to 9-1 in win over Hiram

No. 5 Denison ran its winning streak to eight following a decisive 28-4 win over Hiram College on Tuesday night in Granville. 

With the score tied at 2-2 with just over six minutes to play in the first quarter, Denison scored five unanswered goals to close out the first period with a 7-2 lead.  The momentum carried over into the second quarter where the Big Red outscored the Terriers, 10-0 resulting in a 17-2 halftime lead.

In the first half, Liam Rooney tallied seven points (3 goals, 4 assists).  He finished the game with a team-high eight points thanks to a third quarter assist.  Nick Bortolani followed with three goals and two assists.  Jack Ruf notched a hat trick while Blair Farinholt, Riley Johnson, Brooks Davy, James Meager and Josh Happ all scored twice.

Denison dominated faceoffs, winning 31-of-36 as Eric Baumgardner went 11-for-12 and Jack Waters was 17-for-21.  The Big Red committed six penalties but Hiram was just 1-for-6 on their EMO's.  Denison was 1-for-3 in extra-man.  DU's first goal of the contest was a short-handed score by Rooney off a pass from Happ.

Denison outshot Hiram 69-11 and won the ground ball battle 56-10.  Baumgardner led all players with eight ground balls.  Long stick midfielder John Reinhardt had two caused turnovers. 

Chris Thomas played the first half in goal for Denison.  He finished with four saves while facing six shots.  Clark Bullington played 22 minutes in the second half while Will Nabors closed out the final eight minutes of the game.

Denison will travel to Oberlin College on Saturday, April 9.  The opening faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
