Box Score Denison outscored Allegheny 7-2 over the final 13 minutes of play, rallying from a three-goal deficit to defeat the Gators, 16-14 from Piper Stadium. The win ends DU's regular season with a perfect 8-0 record. This is the 15th time in program history the Big Red has gone undefeated in conference play.
The Gators jumped out to a 12-9 lead and looked to have things in hand entering the waning minutes of the game. As the second half progressed, fouls on both teams became more frequent. That meant more free-position opportunities and some man-up chances for the Big Red.
Halle Walsh got the comeback going with her seventh goal of the game with 12:53 to play. Two minutes later she found Virginia Hamilton in stride on a beautiful goal in front of the cage that trimmed the Gator lead to 12-11.
With 7:55 to play, the Big Red got a short-handed goal after a Claire Ludlow caused a turnover. Ludlow picked up the ground ball and scored for the 32nd time this season, tying the game at 12-12.
The next three minutes elapsed without a goal. After a foul on Allegheny's Alyssa Rapelje, Carol Allen scored on an 8-meter attempt, giving DU its first lead since the opening seconds of the game.
A pair of goals by Allegheny's Gusty Mead tied the game at 14-14 with under three minutes to play. The eventual game-winner came from Allen on a feed from Ludlow with Denison in a two-player advantage after consecutive yellow cards on Gator defenders.
Ludlow and the Big Red added one more goal for good measure with 45 seconds left to lock up the victory.
Allen finished with five goals and two assists. She continues to rise up the ranks in the DU record books. She has scored 147 goals and added 65 assists good for 212 points in her career. She passed Maria Phoenix '96 today to move into third place in career goals. She is tied for fourth in career assists and is fourth in points.
Laura Van Horn got the start and finished with six saves while playing the first half in the cage. Hannah Magarian played the second half and posted two saves while picking up the victory. Kaelin Clogan was brilliant in the cage for Allegheny. She finished with 18 saves in 60 minutes.
Mead paced Allegheny with four goals. McKenzie Bell added three scores and two assists.
Denison will enter next week's NCAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed and will control home field advantage throughout. They will host fourth-seeded Wooster on Wednesday, May 4 at 6:30 p.m.
NOTABLE: Prior to the game Denison recognized its three senior members: Carol Allen, Lizzy Pellicane and Laura Van Horn. This trio has won at least 10 games every season, and 48 games overall. Each of the last two seasons, they have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
