Denison tops DePauw, sets up rematch with Lords

For the second-straight day, Denison junior Costas Alevizopoulos provided the match-clinching point in a Big Red victory. This time the junior secured a 5-3 victory over 33rd-ranked DePauw in the semifinals of the 2016 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament at the Jasper Tennis Center in Gambier, Ohio.

Due to impending rain in the forecast in Granville, the semifinal round of the NCAC Tournament was moved indoors at both Kenyon and the Mitchell Fieldhouse in Granville. Despite being the official host institution, the third-seeded and 32nd-ranked Big Red were forced to make the 30-mile trip north to Gambier to take on the second-seeded Tigers.

With the match deadlocked at 3-3, sophomore Jamie McDonald capped off the first round of matches at the four-court venue with a hard-fought straight-set win over Patrick Farrell. After doubling up Farrell in the first set, McDonald and his DePauw counterpart battled to a 6-6 tie through the first 12 points. The Denison sophomore was able to earn a 7-3 victory in the tiebreaker, successfully earning the final point of the set.

Alevizopoulos had a very similar but slightly more difficult road to his match-ending win. Like his teammate McDonald, the junior was a 6-3 winner in his opening set with Harold Martin. The two sixth singles competitors split the first 12 points to force another second-set tiebreaker. In a tightly contested tiebreaker, Alevizopoulos edged Martin 7-5 to send the Big Red into the championship match of the tournament.

Martin and Nate Wallace gave the Tigers an early 1-0 lead with an 8-1 victory at third doubles. The Big Red responded with matching 8-6 wins at second and first doubles to take a 2-1 advantage. Blake Burstein and John Armstrong clipped Farrell and John Daseke at the second flight, while the No. 1 doubles team of Kevin Brown and Jackson O'Gorman-Bean defeated Dan Rodefeld and Alec Kaczkowski.

Brown, who is ranked 12th in the Central Region, moved the match score to 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over seventh-ranked Rodefeld. Kaczkowski and Matt Santen evened the match at 3-3 with wins at third and fourth singles, respectively.

With their semifinal victory, Denison (13-6) secured a spot in the NCAC Tournament Championship Match where they will play top-seeded Kenyon (11-9), who defeated fourth-seeded Oberlin 5-1 in the other semifinal match. Sunday's championship match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
