Box Score Denison's Al Nennig was hit by a pitch with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning. That drove in Tucker Davison with the winning run as the Big Red defeated Marietta College, 3-2, from Big Red Field in Granville.
This game had a playoff feel surrounding it, mostly due to the fantastic pitching performances by both squads. Denison starter Zack Huarte got the start and went nine innings. He struck out nine and allowed two runs and two walks on 110 pitches. Marietta got five scoreless innings from starting pitcher Tyler Nieberding.
The Pioneers drew first blood in the top of the sixth when Tim McCoy started the inning with a single to right field. Joey Begany dropped a sacrifice bunt, moving McCoy to second. That set the table for Eric White, who laced a single to right, scoring McCoy. On the play, White tried stretching the single into a double and he was cut down at second by Evan Flax in right field.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Pioneers until the bottom of the seventh. Nennig reached first after being hit by a pitch for the first of two times on the day. That set the table for Duncan Moran who ripped a double off the base of the wall in right field, moving Nennig to third. With Sam Frazen at the plate, on a swing and a miss strike, the ball went off the glove of the Marietta catcher and went to the backstop. That allowed Nennig to come around with the tying run. With pinch runner Joseph Maydwell on second base, Frazen gave DU a 2-1 lead with an RBI infield single.
In the Marietta half of the ninth, Huarte entered looking for the complete game win. A leadoff double by White gave the Pioneers a leg up on tying the game. A failed sacrifice bunt attempt followed but a pinch-hit single by Doug Bennett with one out tied the game at 2-2. Huarte worked out of the jam thanks to a 4-6-3 double play.
In the bottom of the ninth, Frazen reached with a two-out single. An error by Marietta's shortstop put runners on the corners for Flax who hit the ball hard, but right at the shortstop for the third out of the inning.
The ball was turned over to the DU bullpen in the 10th and after Adam Goldstein got one out, Marietta's Chris Petrucci reached on an error. A balk moved him to second and a flare single to right put runners on the corners. Denison intentionally walked McCoy, loading the bases to set up the double play. Wednesday night's winning pitcher, Ian Walsh, entered the game in the most precarious of positions but he calmly got Marietta to pop out to second and fly out to center.
In the home half of the 10th, freshman Jacob Baker came on to pitch for the Pioneers and Tucker Davison started things off with a one-out single to left. Joe LaPlaca followed with a bunt single and after a Jack Blanchard walk, that set the table for Nennig who locked up the walk-off win by being hit by a pitch with a full count.
The win marked Denison's first victory over Marietta since March 24, 2011. This was also head coach Mike Deegan's first career win against his alma mater.
Meegan led Denison at the plate, going 4-for-5 from the leadoff spot. Frazen was 3-for-4 with one RBI. Meegan and Moran had both of Denison's extra-base hits.
The win went to Walsh (3-0) who pitched two-thirds of an inning. Baker took the loss and dropped to 0-2.
The win moves Denison to 10-5 while Marietta drops to 13-8. The Big Red will return on Wednesday, April 6 when they travel to Baldwin Wallace for a 4 p.m. first pitch in Berea, Ohio.
