Big Red advance to NCAC Semifinal

The 32nd-ranked Denison men's tennis team earned a spot in the 2016 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal round with a 5-0 victory over Allegheny on Friday afternoon in Granville, Ohio.

The freshmen tandem of Blake Burstein and John Armstrong opened the scoring with a closely-contested 8-6 decision over Tyler Triolo and Zach Anderson at second doubles. That victory avenged an 8-6 defeat in the regular season finale five days prior. Junior Owen Smith and sophomore Jamie McDonald kept the momentum rolling for DU as they doubled up Samarth Gopal and Andrews Landgrebe, 8-4, at the third flight. The win extended Smith and McDonald's current winning streak to five.

In the top doubles flight, senior Jackson O'Gorman-Bean and freshman Kevin Brown rallied from an early deficit to take an 8-7 lead over Thomas Manning and Jai Redkar. The Gator duo secured the next point to push the flight into tie breaker. O'Gorman-Bean and Brown were able to secure their fifth-straight victory by winning that tiebreaker 7-5.

Smith collected his second win of the day at No. 4 singles, defeating Gopal via matching 6-2 scores. The match-ending point came at sixth singles where junior Costas Alevizopoulos knocked off Colton Johnson-Taylor 6-2, 6-2.

With the win, the Big Red (12-6) advance to the semifinals of the NCAC Tournament where they will take on second-seeded and 33rd-ranked DePauw, who shut out Ohio Wesleyan in the opening round. The two teams are scheduled to take the court at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning. Two weeks ago, Denison defeated DePauw 5-4 in Greencastle, Ind. Allegheny will face off against Wabash in the fifth-place match on Saturday at 9 a.m.
