Box Score 2 Denison opened its four-game series with Wabash College by winning game one, 7-3. The Big Red dropped game two, 6-0. The two teams will return to Goodrich Ballpark on Saturday at 9 a.m. The start time of Saturday's twinbill was bumped up three hours in an attempt to best forecasted inclement weather.
Game one saw Denison score one run in each of the first two innings before opening it up with a 5-run third inning. In the first inning, an Evan Flax double scored Noah Hahn with the game's first run. On the play, DU's Connor Green was cut down at the plate, ending an early threat.
In the second, Jack Blanchard started the inning with a double and after Duncan Moran flew out to left, Blanchard moved to third. That set the table for Sam Frazen to plate Blanchard with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
The Big Red broke through in the third as Tanner Johnson and Hahn started things off with back-to-back singles. A single by Eric Zmuda scored Johnson and Hahn. After a groundout by Flax scored Hahn with the fourth run of the game, Blanchard followed with a single through the right side, scoring Green. Moran followed with a 2-run blast to right, giving his team a 7-0 lead.
Denison starter Zack Huarte was locked in through four innings as he allowed only two Wabash base hits. In the Little Giants' half of the fifth, they scored three runs off three hits. The big blow was a 2-run double by David Oliger.
Huarte recovered, allowing just one hit over the final two innings to post his third complete game of the season. He improved to 6-1 while lowering his ERA to 3.06.
Hahn was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Blanchard went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Moran's home run was his second of the season.
Game two saw the Little Giants bounce back with a 7-0 win powered by a complete game shutout by Michael Herrmann. He struck out six and walked two while scattering five hits.
Zmuda led DU in game two, going 2-for-4 with a double. Ian Walsh took the loss as he pitched six innings, allowing three earned runs off five hits. He walked five and struck out five. Walsh was saddled with a loss for the first time in 2016 as he drops to 6-1.
