DU advances to NCAC title game after win over Wooster

Sixth-ranked Denison ran its winning streak to 14 and set up a much-anticipated rematch with Ohio Wesleyan after a resounding 17-8 win over The College of Wooster on Wednesday night.  With the win, Denison will host the 15th ranked Battling Bishops in the championship of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday at 3 p.m. inside Piper Stadium.

Denison outscored Wooster 5-1 in the first quarter and proceeded to score the first six goals of the second quarter to take an 11-2 lead into halftime.  Senior middie James Meager had a big night, scoring four goals in the second quarter and five goals in the first half to lead the Denison offense.

It was also a good night for Denison FOGO Eric Baumgardner who was 18-for-27 facing off.  He posted a season-high nine ground balls while also causing two turnovers.

Following Meager in scoring was attackman Liam Rooney who scored three goals while chipping in one assist and four ground balls.  Senior All-American Blair Farinholt scored two goals and one assist.  Nick Bortolani scored once while posting two assists.

Chris Thomas played 46 minutes in cage for Denison and finished with five saves while facing 11 shots.  Clark Bullington saved one shot while facing three shots on goal from the Scots.

The Big Red held a commanding lead in ground balls, 41-27 while outshooting the Scots 45-28.  Denison was 1-for-3 in man-up while Wooster finished 2-for-4.

This is the fourth year the NCAC has sponsored a postseason tournament for men's lacrosse.  This is the fourth time Denison and Ohio Wesleyan will meet in the title game.  Ohio Wesleyan prevailed in 2013 and 2015 with Denison winning in 2014.  The Big Red is winners of 14-straight games dating back to Feb. 25 at Roanoke.
