DU routs Gators in regular season finale

The 23rd-ranked Denison women's tennis capped off the regular season with an 8-1 victory over Allegheny on Sunday afternoon at the Robertson Complex in Meadville, Pa.

DU swept doubles play to take a 3-0 lead in the match. The Big Red's top team of Meg Chiumento and Lauren Hawley collected their fourth-straight and 12th overall win following an 8-2 decision over Andrea Brush and Mikaela Pope. Emma Alsup and Ashley Hammons improved to 2-2 on the year after defeating Heidi Mueller and Michaela Thompson 8-3. At the third flight, Olivia Underwood and Charlotte Purnode earned an 8-4 nod over Jasmine Burton and Kirstie Oravec.

Denison won five of the six singles flights, only dropping a decision at third singles. Hawley, Alsup and Hammons all extended their winning streaks to three after victories at first, second and fourth singles, respectively. Hawley defeated Pope 6-4, 6-1, while Alsup was a 6-0, 6-4 winner over Brush. After dropping the opening set, Hammons took the next two via 6-3 and 10-2 scores.

Sophomore Carol Vitellas and Underwood rounded out the score with wins as the fifth and sixth flights. Vitellas earned her fifth victory of the season with a near perfect win (6-1, 6-0). Underwood knocked off Burton with matching scores of 6-3.

The Big Red will carry a 11-7 record into next weekend's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament held on the campus of Denison University. The three-day tournament will begin on Friday morning and run through Sunday afternoon (April 29-May 1).
