Box Score 2 Denison and Ohio Wesleyan closed out their four-game series on Sunday at Big Red Field in Granville. Denison won game one, 12-4, but suffered a 12-7 loss to the Battling Bishops in game two.
In game one, the Big Red took a 3-1 lead into the fourth inning where they sent 13 batters to the plate, scoring nine runs all with two outs. Eric Zmuda got the rally started with a double to left, scoring Tanner Johnson and Evan Flax. Four consecutive walks by OWU pitchers scored two more runs. The inning was started with a bunt base hit by Flax and kept going with a bases-loaded two-run double to right. Jake Meegan followed with a two-run single up the middle. The ninth run of the inning came across after Johnson doubled to center. Meegan scored from first, after a fielding error by the Bishops.
After sitting for nearly 40 minutes, DU starter Ian Walsh returned to the mound where he went the distance, pitching all seven innings to improve to 6-0. He allowed only three hits while striking out 10. Moss took the loss and dropped to 6-2.
Flax was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Johnson finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs while Meegan and Green each added a pair of hits.
In game two it was the Battling Bishops who rode a big inning to victory. With the game tied 2-2, OWU scored seven runs in the third inning off eight hits.
Denison chipped away at the deficit in the fourth as Flax doubled to left-center, plating Green. Jack Blanchard followed with an RBI single, scoring flax from second. Another run would come in the fifth when Noah Hahn's ground out scored Johnson from third.
With DU trailing 9-5, Ohio Wesleyan hung three runs on the board in the seventh to take a 12-5 lead. Denison scored a run in the seventh and eighth, setting the final at 12-7.
Green was 3-for-5 in game two and was a combined 5-for-8 on the day. Hahn was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Mikey Rivera took the loss, dropping to 4-2 while Trevor Ray pitched six innings to get the victory. His record improves to 4-1. Brett Kiser picked up his third save of the season pitching three innings of relief.
Denison moves to 21-9 and 9-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference West Division. Ohio Wesleyan moves to 20-10 and 7-5 in the NCAC West. With a four-game series against Wabash remaining on Denison's schedule, the Big Red hold a two-game lead over second-place Ohio Wesleyan in the NCAC West Division standings.
Prior to the game Denison thanked its six senior members; Adam Goldstein, Joe LaPlaca, Jake Meegan, Brandon Morgan, Duncan Moran and Ian Walsh for four years of service to the program.
