Case takes two from Big Red

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Denison dropped a pair of games to Case Western Reserve on Saturday afternoon in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.  The Spartans rallied for a 7-5 win in game one and topped the Big Red 11-2 in game two.

In the opener, Denison trailed 3-1 heading into the fifth.  Evan Flax drove in Jake Meegan with a sacrifice fly to left and with runners on first and second, Eric Zmuda knocked in Noah Hahn and Tanner Johnson with a double to the gap in right-center.

Case got one back in the bottom of the inning, but an RBI double by Flax in the seventh gave Denison a 5-4 lead.  Mikey Rivera was the starting pitcher for DU and he worked five innings, allowing four earned off seven hits.  Perley Provost came on in the sixth and worked out of a two-out jam with two runners on.

In the seventh inning, it looked as if Provost and the Big Red were going to get out of the inning unscathed but an error with two outs extended the inning and led to three runs off two hits.  The three unearned runs would be enough to send CWRU to the victory.

Despite not allowing an earned run, Provost was saddled with the loss.  Case reliever Connor Tagg got the win, pitching the final 2.2 innings.  Meegan was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored.  Flax and Zmuda led the team with two RBIs apiece.

In game two, the Spartans scored five runs in the bottom of the first and they added another five runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.  Sophomore pitcher Cody Mauri took the loss while Jake Shields got the win for Case thanks to allowing one run in seven innings pitched.

In his first career start, Al Nennig went 2-for-4 with a triple and one run scored for DU.

With the pair of losses, Denison falls to 9-5 while Case Western Reserve improves to 14-9.  The Big Red will look to get back in the win column on Sunday, April 3 when they host Marietta College at 1 p.m.
