Denison tops Kenyon as winning streak reaches 12

Box Score

An eight-goal second quarter catapulted fifth-ranked Denison to a resounding 17-6 win over Kenyon College from Piper Stadium.  The win clinches at least a share of the 2016 North Coast Athletic Conference Championship.  A victory on Saturday at Wabash would secure the program's 16th NCAC title.

Kenyon kept pace with Denison early, jumping out to a 3-2 lead late in the first quarter.  A goal by Jamie McCahan with three seconds left in the opening period tied the game at 3-3.  Denison opened the second quarter by scoring four goals in under four minutes thanks to tallies by McCahan, Josh Happ, Nick Bortolani and Blair Farinholt.

Kenyon's Robert Jacobs cut Denison's lead to 7-4 with 9:24 to play in the second, but a ground ball by DU's Teddy Sawyer resulted in the first goal of the season for the close defenseman.

The Big Red's next four goals were all be assisted by Farinholt.  He finished with a career-high five assists and one goal running his career points total to 161.  That ranks him 17th in Denison history in points.  His 106 goals rank has him tied for 10th and he checks in 25th in career assists with 55.

Denison outshot Kenyon 40-30.  Kenyon won 15 of 25 faceoffs in a game that was plagued by nine faceoff violations.  There was also plenty of laundry flying from the referees as the two times combined for 13 infractions and 10 minutes of times served.  Kenyon was 2-for-6 in man-up. Denison was 1-for-6.

Chris Thomas, the current NCAC Player of the Week, finished with nine saves in 54 minutes played.  Clark Bullington closed out the final six minutes and ended with three saves.

The defense was led by Sawyer who finished with six ground balls.  Will Donohue scooped up five ground balls and Rooney was the leading scorer with four goals.

Denison moves to 13-1 overall and 7-0 in the NCAC while Kenyon drops to 10-3 and 5-2 in conference play.  This was Denison's 12th straight win and the program's 24th consecutive home victory.  Denison's last loss at Piper Stadium came on April 27, 2013.  With the win, Denison also retained the Thomsen-Heiser Trophy.  Created in 2012, the winner of the annual Denison-Kenyon regular season game is awarded the trophy that bears the name of two of the program's legendary coaches; Denison's Tommy Thomsen and Kenyon's Bill Heiser.

The Big Red will close out the regular season on Saturday when they take on Wabash College at 2 p.m. in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
