DU sweeps series, extends streak at Witt

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Denison baseball team improved to a perfect 8-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference West Division play following a doubleheader sweep on Sunday in Springfield, Ohio. The Big Red took game one 4-1 before routing the Tigers, 21-4, in the finale.

In addition to keeping their unblemished league record intact, DU also extended its current winning streak to 10 games, their longest since winning 10-straight in 2004. The 21 runs in game two marked the squad's second game with at least 20 runs in a game this year and the 16th time dating back to the 1949 season.

In the opener, senior Joe LaPlaca opened the scoring when he drew a bases-loaded walk in the second that scored sophomore Tanner Johnson, who reached on a one-out triple. Jake Meegan followed his classmate's walk with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Tucker Davison. The Big Red added two more runs in the third. Johnson drove in junior Evan Flax with a SAC fly to center, while a double by Davison allowed Eric Zmuda to score.

The Tigers were able to score a run in the fourth, but the pitching performance by seniors Ian Walsh and Adam Goldstein kept Wittenberg from mounting a comeback. Walsh improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season after surrendering just one run on eight hits with three strikeouts. Goldstein was needed just 21 pitches to record the final six outs, going two hitless frames en route to his second save of the season.

Zmuda and Johnson both finished with two hits, while senior Duncan Moran was on base three times after being hit in two plate appearance and drawing a free pass.

In the nightcap, the Denison offense flexed their muscle by scoring 21 runs on 17 hits. After falling into a 1-0 hole through two innings, the Big Red pushed across five runs in the top of the third. The Tigers answered with two in the bottom of the frame, but a nine-run fourth put DU up by 11 through four. Denison outscored Wittenberg 7-1 over the final five innings, setting the final score at 21-4.

All nine batters in the starting lineup recorded a hit. Johnson and freshman Connor Green both went 2-for-3 in game two. Johnson drove in three and scored two more, while Green hit his first-career home run, touched the dish three times and knocked in a pair. Flax, Zmuda, Jack Blanchard, Meegan and pinch hitter Ethan Carlyon had two runs apiece. Freshman Matt Bonollo picked up his first-career hit, a two-run double, while Davison blasted a three-run homer for the first of his career.

Freshman pitcher Mikey Rivera improved to 4-1 on the year after allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits with three Ks in five innings of work. Freshman John Troll gave up one run in two innings, while JT Trimble and Cody Mauri each tossed a scoreless inning.

Denison improves to 19-5 overall and 8-0 in the NCAC West, while Wittenberg falls to 6-18 and 2-10 in division action. The Big Red returns to the diamond on Wednesday (April 20) when they travel to Wooster for a 4 p.m. first pitch against the Scots.
