Box Score 2 The Denison baseball victory tour continued in Springfield on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Wittenberg. The Big Red won game one, 8-0, and prevailed in game two, 12-10. DU is now 17-5 overall and 6-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference West Division.
In game one, Mike Deegan handed the ball to Zack Huarte and he picked up right where he left off on Sunday against DePauw. Huarte went go the distance, scattering four hits and did not walk a batter while striking out four. His record improved to 5-0 and his ERA dipped to 1.88.
With Denison leading 1-0, Duncan Moran belted a two-run homer to right in the second inning. Noah Hahn added an RBI single in the sixth.
DU blew things open in the seventh with RBI singles from Jack Blanchard and Hahn. Eric Zmuda and Moran also drew bases loaded walks.
Jordan Hitt pitched 6.1 innings for Wittenberg, allowing seven earned runs off of 11 hits. He took the loss and dropped to 3-2 on the year.
Game two saw the Big Red jump out to a 12-3 lead through seven innings. The Tigers scored seven runs in the eighth and ninth inning before Connor Hanrahan worked out of a jam to secure the 12-10 win and his second save of the season.
Leading 3-1 after four innings, Denison plated five runs in the fifth thanks to four hits and one Tiger error. Evan Flax delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded. After a sacrifice bunt by Zmuda that moved Blanchard and Flax into scoring position. Sam Frazen delivered a two-run double to left. Tucker Davison followed with a two-out single to center that scored Frazen with the fifth run of the frame.
DU added three more in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Davison and a two-run single by Tanner Johnson.
Perley Provost pitched six innings in the start. He allowed eight hits and one earned run. His record improved to 3-1 on the year. Hanrahan earned his second save of the season pitching the ninth inning where he gave up one hit, one walk and one run.
Frazen was 3-for-4 with three RBIs in game two. Zmuda was 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. In the two games combined, Denison hitters combined for 20 runs and 25 hits.
Denison will return to action on Sunday to close out their four-game series with Wittenberg. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
