The 23rd-ranked Denison women's tennis team suffered a 9-0 setback to 26th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Midwest Invitational on Friday morning in Madison, Wis.
In a battle between the top-2 doubles teams in the Central Region, the top-ranked team of Megan Humphreys and Bridgid McGuire doubled up Meg Chiumento and Lauren Hawley, 8-4. The freshmen tandem of Emma Alsup and Ashley Hammons dropped a close 8-6 decision to the No. 5 team in the region, Jillian Wallace and Alicia Beck.
In singles action, the No. 3 and No. 4 players in the Central Region squared off when Humphreys battled Hawley at first singles. Humphreys got the better of the Big Red freshman, winning via matching 6-3 scores. Chiumento also dropped a straight-set decision to a regionally-ranked opponent, falling 6-1, 6-2 to Gabi Kitchell who is ranked eighth in the region.
Denison falls to 7-7 with the loss, while the Warhawks improve to 17-2. The Big Red returns to action on Saturday when they take on the loser of the match between ninth-ranked Washington-St. Louis and No. 39 Gustavus Adolphus. Saturday's match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. central time.
