With the match deadlocked at 4-4, Denison's Colin Bahin rallied for a three-set victory over Kalamazoo's Allen Vinson at No. 6 singles, propelling his team to a thrilling 5-4 win from Mitchell Fieldhouse.
Denison entered the match ranked 35th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Top-40 poll and both Kalamazoo and Denison were ranked in the central region with the Hornets checking in 10th and Denison sitting ninth.
In the deciding match, Bahin would drop the first set 2-6 but midway through the second he would find his groove, breaking Vinson's serve to go up 4-3. That break would allow him to pull ahead for a 6-4 win in the second, forcing the decisive third set.
Bahin's serve would be broken early and he trailed 3-4. He would counter with a break of his own, tying things at 4-4 and then held his serve to go up 5-4. Both would hold the next three games forcing the tiebreaker that Bahin would gut out 5-3.
To get to that point, Denison needed to win four of the six singles matches after dropping two of three in doubles.
Other than Bahin, singles wins would come from Owen Smith, 6-2, 6-0 out of the fifth flight. Jack O'Koniewski defeated Eric De Witt, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 and Jamie McDonald handed Robert Hudson a loss at No. 2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
In doubles, Denison's Kevin Brown and Jackson O'Gorman-Bean defeated Branden Metzler and Elan Dantus, 8-5.
Denison improves to 4-3 while Kalamazoo falls to 4-2. The Big Red will return to action on March 14 when they take on Division I Colgate in Puerto Rico.
