Box Score With Denison clinging to a 3-1 lead, a four-run eighth inning propelled the Big Red to a 7-2 win over Ohio Northern on Wednesday night. The win moves Denison's record to 9-3 while Ohio Northern falls to 11-7. This marked the second win over the Polar Bears in as many days.
Denison starting pitcher Ian Walsh pitched the first six innings and allowed only one run off five hits. He struck out five and walked two. Adam Goldstein entered the game in the seventh inning with Denison leading 2-1. He allowed just one hit in two innings while striking out two.
In the bottom of the eighth, Evan Flax reached base after being hit by ONU reliever Zach Foster. Eric Zmuda followed with an infield single and a bunt base hit by Jack Blanchard loaded the bases with no outs.
Designated hitter Phil Papaioannou drew a bases loaded walk bringing Sam Frazen to the plate. Frazen sent a chopper to third baseman Jordan Bostater who came home for the force out at the plate. ONU got the out at home and went to first for the double play. Frazen beat the throw to first but good hustle from DU on the base paths allowed Blanchard to score and pinch runner Al Nennig to advance to third.
Duncan Moran, who entered the game in the top half of the inning as a defensive replacement, followed with a double to the gap in right-center, scoring Nennig. Foster left the game after retiring just one batter while allowing four runs to cross the plate. Tyler Batt got the Polar Bears out of the inning.
In the top of the ninth, Connor Hanrahan came on to pitch for Denison. He allowed one hit and one run but that wouldn't matter as the Big Red closed out the 7-2 win.
Tanner Johnson was 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs. Papaioannou was 1-for-2 with two walks. Moran had Denison's only extra-base hit in the eighth.
Walsh improves to 2-0 on the season while Ohio Northern starter Devin Carr drops to 1-2. The Big Red will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Case Western Reserve for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
