Box Score Zack Huarte and Perley Provost did not allow an earned run while scattering two hits, helping lead Denison to a 4-1 win over Ohio Northern from Wander Field in Ada, Ohio.
Huarte got the start for Denison and pitched the first six innings. He struck out six and gave up just two hits on 98 pitches.
The first three innings were scoreless. Denison plated the first run of the game in the top of the fourth when Evan Flax and Jack Blanchard started off the frame with back-to-back singles. With one out, Duncan Moran laced a base hit to center. The ball was misplayed by the ONU centerfielder, allowing Flax to score the game's first run. With runners on first and second and only one out, Polar Bear starter Ben Eckert would get out of the jam, retiring the next to Denison hitters.
In the bottom of the fourth, Ohio Northern put two runners on base when T.J. Storer was hit by a pitch and when Braydon Focht reached base on an error. Clay Small delivered a double to left, scoring Storer. Huarte struck out Dan Barna, stranding Focht at third.
Denison responded with a two-out rally in the fifth. After Eric Zmuda reached on an error, he stole second. Flax drew a walk, setting up Blanchard for the go-ahead single to center. Sam Frazen also stroked a single that scored Flax. That spurred Denison into the bottom of the fifth with a 3-1 lead.
Huarte retired Ohio Northern in order in the fifth. In the sixth, Denison's Noah Hahn delivered a double to left, scoring Tanner Johnson and giving the Big Red a 4-1 lead.
The bottom of the sixth was Huarte's final inning of work and despite allowing a two-out walk, he got out of the inning unscathed.
Denison handed the ball over to Provost in the seventh and he allowed just one walk while facing 10 batters. Provost earned his first save of the season while Huarte improved to 3-0.
Blanchard went 3-for-4 while raising his batting average to .362. Flax was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Hahn finished the day 2-for-5.
Eckert took the loss for ONU and dropped to 0-2 on the year. Clay Small and Cody Meyer had the Polar Bears' two hits on the day.
This marked Denison's fewest hits allowed in a game since the Big Red handed DePauw and 8-2 loss with just two hits allowed on March 31, 2013.
The Big Red (8-3) will return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 30 against Ohio Northern (11-6). This time, it will happen at Big Red Field in Granville at 6 p.m.
