Denison splits with Defiance

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Sarah Herold fired a complete game two-hitter in game one, helping Denison to a 4-0 win over Defiance.  In the nightcap, the Yellow Jackets would force the split with a 9-1 win over the Big Red.

In the opener, Herold was perfect through 4 1/3 until Jackie Hartman laced a single up the middle in the fifth inning.  Defiance would follow with a pinch hit single putting runners on first and second, but Herold would get Megan Pleskovic to fly out to Katie Nichols in left, ending the threat.

Denison got all four of its runs in the first inning when Herold and Maddie Crull opened the game with base hits.  With Kerry Hager at the plate, an error on the third baseman would allow Herold to come around and score.  Amanda Howell would draw a walk, loading the bases, and Lauren Secaras would reach on a fielder's choice after an error at the dish by Defiance catcher Megan Warren.  On the error, both Crull and Hager would score.

DU's fourth run would cross the plate on a wild pitch by Yellow Jacket starter Sarah Kaya.

After the big opening inning, Denison would only piece together two more hits the rest of the way.  Luckily for the Big Red, Herold was dialed in.  She went the distance, walking only one while striking out seven of the 24 batters faced.  Herold improves to 3-3 on the year.

In game two, Denison's lone run would come on a solo homer by Secaras in the second inning.  That was her second blast of the season.  Defiance pitcher Jamie Kimbler had the Big Red off-kilter throughout as she worked all five innings, scattering two hits without a walk or a strikeout.  She improved to 4-1 on the year while Denison first-year Colleen Hoffman took the loss.  She pitched 3.1 innings in the start and allowed seven earned runs on eight hits.

Megan Warren led Defiance at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs.

Denison's record moves to 7-7.  They will return to action next Tuesday, April 29 when they travel to Marietta, Ohio for a doubleheader against the Pioneers.
