Box Score Thirteenth-ranked Denison scored five of the game's last six goals that helped them complete a 9-7 win over No. 18 Dickinson at the Greene Turtle Classic hosted by Stevenson University.
With the game tied 7-7 with five minutes to play in regulation, Big Red goalie Chris Thomas recorded back-to-back saves that resulted in a Denison possession. With 4:05 left, Sam Fiedorek scored his first goal of the season. The Big Red would win the ensuing faceoff and with 2:20 left in the game, Dickinson's Andy Grabis would be flagged for slashing. The one-minute extra-man situation would result in a goal by Nick Bortolani from Jake Waxter with 1:54 to go.
The Red Devils would force the issue, winning the faceoff and taking a shot that sailed high. Denison close defenseman Teddy Sawyer created a turnover but the Big Red's clear would fail, giving the ball back to Dickinson with one minute to play. A penalty on Liam Rooney put the Red Devils in man-up but a Thomas Farrell caused turnover early in the EMO took the pressure off the Denison defense. With 26 second left, a penalty on Dickinson would move things back to even strength allowing the Big Red to run out the clock.
Denison started out red-hot, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter after goals by Brian Miller, Bortolani and a man-up score by Waxter. Dickinson would score the next four goals until a tally by Rooney just before halftime sent the two teams into the intermission tied 4-4.
In the third quarter, the Red Devils took a 6-4 lead behind goals by Chris Menard and John Lockwood. With just under seven minutes left in the third, James Meager scored off a feed from Blair Farinholt. That started a string of three-straight goals by Denison that sent them into the fourth leading 7-6.
Bortolani finished with three goals and four ground balls while Waxter added one goal and two assists. Sawyer was outstanding on defense, posting a game-high five caused turnovers and seven ground balls. Ben Duhoski added four ground balls and Hannibal George contributed five.
Thomas notched 11 saves for Denison while playing all 60 minutes. Nick Baxter stopped nine shots for Dickinson.
The Red Devils outshot the Big Red 39-31 and won 14-of-19 faceoffs. Denison was 2-for-2 in man-up while winning the ground ball category 35-31.
Denison will be back in action on Saturday when they face another nationally ranked opponent at the Green Turtle Classic. Faceoff against fifth-ranked Nazareth is slated for 12:30 p.m. from Mustang Stadium on the campus of Stevenson University.
