The Denison women's tennis team suffered a pair of setbacks to Division I Navy, 6-1, and the defending Division II national champion Armstrong State, 9-0, on Wednesday in Palmas del Mar, Puerto Rico.
Against the United State Naval Academy, the Big Red earned the doubles points after winning two of the three flights. The second doubles team of Courtney Brown and Emma Alsup picked up DU's first victory of the trip with a 6-3 win over Claudia Mackenzie and Catalina Rico. At No. 1 doubles, senior Meg Chiumento and freshman Lauren Hawley won an 7-5 decision over Summer Ralston and Carlee Conway, clinching the doubles point.
Navy swept singles play, winning all but one flight in straight sets. Chiumento defeated Conway in the opening set of the third flight before dropping the final two.
In their second match of the day, DU dropped a 9-0 decision to the Pirates, who captured their ninth Division II national title in 2015.
Denison (4-5) returns to action on Thursday (March 24) when they travel to Delaware, Ohio to take on Ohio Wesleyan University. Start time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
