Denison rebounds with 13-10 win over #18 Washington College

Box Score

Denison outscored No. 18 Washington College 8-5 in the second half, en route to a 13-10 win over the Shorewomen from Bayamon, Puerto Rico.  After suffering a three-goal loss to Springfield in Monday's opener in Puerto Rico, the Big Red never trailed against the nationally-ranked Shorewomen.

With Denison clinging to a two-goal lead with less than five minutes to play, a foul on DU's Leah Isreal would result in an 8-meter shot for Washington College.  Emily Pantazes converted the free-position attempt, trimming Denison's lead to 11-10.

The Shorewomen had been dominating draws throughout most of the contest and that would continue as Autumn Spence controlled the draw after Pantazes' goal.  Before Washington College could get a shot off, Denison's Briana Alberghine was there for force a turnover.  The ground ball was scooped up by Halle Walsh who found Lizzy Pellicane.  She would move the ball to senior attacker Carol Allen who scored DU's biggest goal of the day with 2:17 on the clock.  Allen's goal put Denison up 12-10.

After another draw control by Washington College and time at a premium, Katherine Vincent sent a quick shot on the Denison cage that was being manned by Hannah Magarian.  She would post her fourth save of the half while getting the ball back in the Big Red's possession.

After DU's 21st clear of the contest, Pellicane would connect with Claudia Rafi with 1:08 to play, giving DU a 13-10 lead.  The Shorewomen would put one more shot-on-goal, but it would be turned away by Magarian with 42 seconds on the clock, securing the win for Denison.

The fast-paced contest saw Denison attempt 27 clears while Washington College attempted and completed 15.  The Big Red held a 24-16 advantage in ground balls but lost the draw control battle 19-5.  Denison's pair of goalies, Becca Jones and Magarian, combined for 14 saves.  Jones got the start and racked up nine saves in the first 30 minutes.  Magarian followed with five saves in the second half.

Claire Ludlow led Denison in scoring with three goals and one assist.  Rafi followed with two goals on three shots and Kristine McNulty chipped in two goals and three ground balls.  Annie Rose, Reid Hirschey, Allen, Virginia Hamilton, Annie McMahon and Colleen Muldoon all scored one goal for Denison.

The Shorewomen were led by Pantazes and Katherine Vincent who each finished with three goals.  Madeline Mullen played all 60 minutes in goal and finished with 11 saves.

The win marks the first time Denison has defeated a team in the USILA Top-20 since the statistic started being tracked in 2003.  The Big Red improves to 2-3 while Washington Colleges falls to 3-1.  DU will return to action on Thursday when they take on second-ranked Franklin & Marshall at 10:30 a.m. in Puerto Rico.
