Defending national champion Max Levy captured his first NCAA Division III Diving Regional championship of his career on Friday night at the Trumbull Aquatics Center. Levy's performance led a foursome of Big Red divers to strong finishes on the 1-meter board.
Levy finished with an 11-dive score of 537.10 to win the event against 23 other competitors from throughout the central region. His best scoring dive was his ninth, an inward 2 1/2 somersault tuck (405C) with a 3.1 degree of difficulty. That dive landed him 68.20 points.
The 2013 NCAA Division III national champion on the 1-meter, Ben Lewis, placed second with a score of 501.20 while junior teammate Brian Allen took third after totaling a score of 463.10. Lewis posted his best dive on an inward 1 1/2 somersault pike (403B) with a 2.4 degree of difficulty. That dive would score a 58.80 from the judges.
Allen would also log one 50+ point dive when he scored 54.60 on his forward 2 1/2 somersault pike (105B) on his sixth dive.
Denison's Nathan Lightman would log a sixth-place showing with a score of 432.55. Lightman had a pair of 50+ point dives. His best was a forward 2 1/2 somersault pike (105B) which resulted in a 58.50 score from the panel.
Ten of the 24 divers entered in the meet will advance to the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships in Greensboro, N.C. on March 16-19. The NCAA Regional will conclude on Saturday when the men compete on the 3-meter board at 4 p.m.
