Box Score Denison scored the first six goals of the game, with three coming from James Meager. That helped No. 17 Denison to a convincing season-opening 13-3 win over Washington and Lee from Lexington, Va.
Denison wasted little time getting in the scoring column as Jamie McCahan found Meager for his first goal of the day just 1:15 into the contest. After a W&L turnover gave Denison the ball with 8:05 to play in the quarter, Denison's Jake Waxter notched the first goal of his collegiate career with 7:17 to play.
Another newcomer, Owen Armstrong, would tally DU's third goal via another McCahan set-up. After the Armstrong goal, Eric Baumgardner secured his fourth-straight faceoff win the Big Red took a 4-0 lead after a goal by Meager off an assist from Blair Farinholt.
The Big Red took its lead to the second quarter with another goal by Meager at 14:04, followed by Will Donohue's first of the year off a faceoff win and assist from Baumgardner. That had the Big Red flying high at 6-0.
Fifteen seconds later, W&L's Andrew Riehl scored on a give-and-go after scooping up the ground ball off the faceoff. The two teams would play the final 13:42 of the second quarter without a goal.
In the third, DU outscored the Generals 2-1 thanks to goals from Brian Miller and a man-up goal from Donohue.
Leading 8-2 heading into the fourth, the Big Red outscored Washington and Lee, 5-1 over the final 15 minutes to leave Lexington with the 13-3 win.
Meager led all players with three goals and one assist. Donohue scored twice while Farinholt posted one goal and three assists. Other scorers included Baumgardner (1g, 1a), Nick Bortolani (1g), Waxter (1g), Miller (1g), Alex Paulus (1g), Armstrong (2g, 1a), McCahan (2a) and Ben Duhoski (1a).
Baumgardner was 11-for-17 while facing off. Donohue led the team with five ground balls while Will Tully and John Reinhardt added four apiece.
Chris Thomas got the start in goal for Denison and finished with six saves. W&L got 13 saves from Wyatt Devine. He played all 60 minutes. The Big Red held a 41-19 advantage in ground balls while outshooting the Generals 44-21. Denison was 1-for-3 in extra-man situations. Washington and Lee was 0-for-2.
Denison (1-0) will return to Virginia on Wednesday, Feb. 24 when they take on No. 14 Roanoke in Salem, Va. at 3:30 p.m.
