Big Red blanks Gators to stay unbeaten in NCAC

Box Score

GRANVILLE -- The Denison women's soccer team collected their fourth consecutive victory on Saturday afternoon, knocking off North Coast Athletic Conference rival Allegheny, 1-0, at Piper Stadium.

In addition to the Big Red extending their longest winning streak of the season, DU head coach Gail Murphy secured her 300th-career victory in the shutout. Murphy, who ranked 19th in wins among active Division III coaches at the start of the season, became the 25th coach in Division III history to reach the 300-career win milestone.

Denison put the pedal to the metal from the opening kickoff, generating scoring chances throughout the entire first half. Junior captain Meg Wozniak tried to slip a through ball to senior Jacquie Graham that appeared to be smothered by goalie Colleen Fleming. After some contact with Fleming the ball squirted free and was punched into the back of the net. However, the center official waved the goal off because of the contact with the Gator keeper.

In the 28th minute, Allison Vilsack connected with Maggie Armstrong who unloaded a shot from eight yards out that was stopped by Fleming. Just 45 seconds after Armstrong's attempt, junior Grace Murray converted her fifth goal of the season off an assist from freshman Phoebe Gilbert. Gilbert danced around a defender before driving towards the end line. The freshman sent a low cross that was chipped in from three yards out by Murray at 28:44. The Big Red finished the opening period with an 11-0 advantage in shots.

Early in the second half, Isabella Martinez nearly made it 1-1 on what turned out to be Allegheny's only shot of the match. However, the strong attempt traveled just outside the upper right corner of the goal. With roughly 30 minutes to go in regulation, Jessie Thiessen almost connected with Taylor Renk on the game-tying goal. However, a sliding Jenny Herold broke up the Thiessen cross.

The Big Red controlled play, outshooting the Gators 23-1. Denison also attempted all 11 corner kicks, while each team was whistled for eight fouls. Fleming made 13 saves over the course of 90 minutes, while Herold didn't face a shot on frame en route to her fourth shutout of the season.

Denison improves to 6-3-3 overall and a perfect 3-0 in league play, while Allegheny falls to 3-7-1 and 0-2 in the NCAC. The Big Red returns to action next Wednesday (Oct. 12) when they travel to Wooster for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
