Oberlin doubles up DU, 2-1

Box Score

GRANVILLE -- Gwennie Gardiner scored both Oberlin as the Yeowomen picked up a 2-1 victory over Denison in the final game of the regular season on Saturday at Piper Stadium.

The Big Red broke the scoreless tie in the 30th minute off a failed clear by Oberlin following an Anne Denz corner kick. Sophomore midfielder Madison Smith settled the loose ball and unloaded a shot that struck the bottom of the crossbar before crossing the goal line at 29:35. Smith's first score of the season gave the home team a 1-0 advantage.

The score remained the same until the 42nd minute when Taylor French slipped a through ball to Gardiner who went down the right side before sending a shot into the lower left corner from eight yards out. After nearly 35 minute of scoreless play in the second half, Gardiner broke the tie with just under 10 minutes to play. After forcing a turnover in the middle of the field, the Oberlin junior capitalized on her breakaway with a goal in the lower right 90.

DU had four more shot attempts inside the final nine minutes, with the best attempt coming from senior Jacquie Graham. Graham volleyed a one timer that forced Yeowomen goalie Jordyn Morris to make a diving save with less than six and a half to play.

The Big Red outshot Oberlin 22-4 and had 12 of the game's 13 corner kicks. The two teams combined for just five fouls, while registering six offsides. Morris finished with six saves in the match.

Denison (8-5-4) wrapped up the regular season with a 5-2-1 record in the North Coast Athletic Conference which earned them the second seed in next week's conference tournament. As the No. 2 seed, the Big Red will host the tournament's third seed on Wednesday. Match time is TBA.
