Box Score GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- The Denison women's soccer team scored twice in the opening half en route to a 2-0 victory at DePauw on Saturday afternoon at Reavis Stadium. With the win, the Big Red kept their unbeaten North Coast Athletic Conference record intact at 5-0-1.
After 28 scoreless minutes, Denison earned their first corner kick attempt of the afternoon. In the midst of Grace Murray corner kick, the Tigers were whistled for a foul in the box that resulted in a Big Red penalty kick. Junior center back Drew Wentzel successfully converted her third PK attempt of the season to give Denison a 1-0 lead at 28:41.
With time winding down in the opening period, senior Ashlyn Flaherty sent her second-consecutive corner kick into the box. After coming up empty the first time Flaherty found the head of sophomore Maggie Armstrong who buried her third goal of the season. Armstrong's score came at 43:11.
The second half saw 10 total shots with the Big Red holding a 6-4 edge in attempts. All four of DePauw's attempts were turned aside by junior goalie Jenny Herold. Herold finished the match with five stops en route to her sixth shutout of the season. Her counterpart, Riley Riordan, also made five saves in the losing effort.
Denison (8-3-4) will wrap up the regular season next week with a pair of home matches against Wittenberg (Oct. 26) and Oberlin (Oct. 29). Kickoff against the Tigers is scheduled for 8 p.m.
