Graham's goal sends DU past Kenyon

Box Score

GRANVILLE-- Denison senior Jacquie Graham broke a scoreless tie in the 78th minute, leading the Big Red to a 1-0 victory over visiting Kenyon College on Saturday afternoon.

Both Denison and Kenyon entered the match with identical 3-0-1 records in North Coast Athletic Conference Play.  From the start, Denison asserted themselves as the aggressor on the offensive end, generating shots and opportunities at a steady pace.

Kenyon only attempted two shots in the first half, but a left-footed shot attempt by Fallon Raviol with 1:46 to play in the period went just wide of the far post.

DU held a 7-2 advantage in shots at the intermission.

In the second half, the Big Red nearly broke the tie in the 59th minute when Graham's shot from the top of the box scooted just past the post.  Allison Vilsack followed with a well-struck long ball attempt that was saved by Kenyon goalkeeper Jillian Countey.  Denison quickly regained possession after the save and a back heel shot attempt by Graham just missed the frame.

Spectators at Piper Stadium could feel Denison coming closer and closer to breaking through and it finally happened with 12:50 left on the clock as Grace Murray crossed a pass to the head of Graham who put it away for her ninth goal of the season.

Denison outshot Kenyon 19-4 and blanked the Ladies in corner kick attempts, 4-0.  Eight of Denison's 19 shots were on-goal with seven resulting in saves by Countey.  DU keeper Jenny Herold played all 90 minutes but was not forced to make a save on Kenyon's four offerings.

Denison improves to 7-3-4 overall and 4-0-1 in the NCAC.  Kenyon drops to 5-6-2 and 3-1-1 in conference play.  DU returns to action in seven days when they travel to Greencastle, Indiana for a 12 p.m. match against DePauw.
