Denison flies past Bishops on Senior Day

The Big Red women's swimming and diving team closed out its 2015-16 dual meet schedule with a dominating 180-86 victory over Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday at the Trumbull Aquatics Center.

DU had five multiple winners led by seniors Marissa Bednarek and Mary Van Leuven who notched three victories each. In the opening event of the day, the senior duo teamed up with Carolyn Kane and fellow senior Ashley Yearwood to win the 100 medley relay with a time of 47.68. Bednark also swept the breaststroke events, winning the 50 with a time of 29.68 and finishing the 100 in 1:04.77.

Van Leuven was a two-time winner in sprint freestyle events. The senior captured the 100 free title after touching the wall in 51.96. She later picked up a win in the 50 free after clocking in at 23.99. Kane and Yearwood also logged individual wins. Kane won the 25 freestyle with a time of 11.42, while Yearwood was the 100 fly champ with a time of 58.10.

Denison's other victories came from seniors Libby Dalziel and Kate Wright, junior Campbell Costley and sophomore Halli Garza. Dalziel posted the fastest time in the 50 backstroke after touching in at 29.34, while her classmate, Wright, won the 100 back at 59.55. Costley and Garza dominated the distance freestyle events, winning the 300 (2:56.65) and 500 freestyles (5:15.19), respectively.

The trio of Emma Weber, Eva Vivero and Katherine Hennigan went 1-2-3 on both diving boards. Weber posted an 11-dive score of 398.25 to win the 1-meter, while Vivero and Hennigan logged scores of 358.73 and 283.20, respectively. In the 3-meter, Weber turned in a winning 11-dive score of 404.55. Vivero followed with 394.35 points, while Hennigan took third with 337.95 points.

Prior to the meet Denison recognized its eight senior members who were competing in their final dual meet this afternoon.  The class which consists of Marissa Bednarek, Libby Dalziel, Emily Eiben, Krysta Garbarino, Taylor Johns, Mary Van Leuven, Kate Wright and Ashley Yearwood has won three consecutive North Coast Athletic Conference championships and has placed second, third and fourth at the NCAA Division III Championships.

Denison will return to the pool on Feb. 11-13 when the Big Red host the 2016 North Coast Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championship at the Trumbull Aquatics Center.
