White's 3-point barrage leads DU to a win over Wittenberg

Box Score

Darius White canned six 3-pointers, with three coming over the course of three pivotal minutes in the second half leading Denison to a 69-59 road win over Wittenberg.

White entered the game needing only one 3-pointer to become the program's all-time leader.  He got that record early and left with something even more valuable than a school record, a rare victory in Springfield.

Denison held a 32-29 lead at the intermission and after a layup by Andrew Castagnetti with 13 minutes remaining put his team up by six. DU followed with a stop on the defensive end, only to have White hush the crowd with a pull-up 3-pointer in transition.

That triple sparked three consecutive 3-pointers from White, allowing Denison to open up an 11-point lead with 6:54 to play.

Denison maintained its double-digit lead until the final buzzer.

White paced Denison with 18 points by going 6-of-9 from beyond the arc.  In 97 career games, he has made 215 3-pointers.  Brian Malinowski '96 was the career leader with 209 3-pointers made between 1992 and 1996.

Jett Speelman followed with 16 points while going 5-of-12 in 33 minutes with a team-high five rebounds.  Garrett Collier scored five points and had six assists while Patrick Keller tallied nine points and four rebounds.

Wittenberg was led by Jaelin Williams who scored 15 points while pulling down eight rebounds.  Cody Phillippi followed with 13 points for the Tigers.

Denison shot 45 percent from the field (22-of-49) and was 9-of-23 from long range (.391) while the Tigers shot the ball at a 43 percent clip but were just 3-of-15 from 3-point range.  Wittenberg outrebounded DU 41-27, but 15 Tiger turnovers compared to just seven for Denison was the equalizer.

Winners of four of its last five games, Denison will travel to Oberlin on Wednesday, Feb. 3 to take on the Yeomen at 8 p.m.
