Division I Pitt gets the better of DU

With just two weeks left in Denison's dual meet schedule, the Big Red dropped a 219-81 decision to Division I Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon in the Steel City. 

The Big Red did manage to post one event win and eight runner-up finishes against the Panthers.  The lone win came from sophomore Halli Garza who posted a time of 2:05.47 in the 200 butterfly.

Last week's national swimmer of the week, Mary Van Leuven, would log three second-place swims and one fifth-place finish.  In the 200 freestyle, she would touch in 1:54.85 to take second.  She also swam on the second-place 200 medley relay team with Carolyn Kane, Marissa Bednarek and Ashley Yearwood who finished in 1:45.67.  In the final event of the meet, the 200 free relay, Van Leuven, Yearwood, Kate Wright and Carolyn Kane touched in 1:34.97.  She would also pace Denison with a fifth-place finish in the 100 free in 53.07.

In the two distance freestyle events, Campbell Costley and Taylor Johns would finish 2-3 in the 1,000 free and the 500 free.  Costley would post times of 10:14.55 and 4:57.64, respectively while Johns recorded times of 10:24.11 and 5:01.46.

In addition to swimming on both relays, Carolyn Kane also finished second in the 100 butterfly in 58.41 and was fourth in the 50 free in 24.34. Garza followed Kane in the 100 fly in 59.62 while Wright touched fifth in the 50 free in 24.63.

In the 200 backstroke, Wright took bronze in 2:08.60 while Yearwood (59.27) and Elizabeth Kane (1:00.82) went third and fifth respectively in the 100 back.

DU's top performers in the pool were rounded out by breaststrokers Bednarek and Marisa Pulaski.  In the 100 breast, Bednarek was the runner-up in 1:04.91 while Pulaski finished fourth in 1:06.44.  In the 200, Pulaski took second in 2:20.52 while Bednarek ended in fourth with a time of 2:21.31.

In diving, Denison's Emma Weber, Eva Vivero and Katherine Hennigan finished 5-6-7, respectively on both boards.  In the 3-meter, Weber led Denison with a six-dive score of 231.30.  On the 1-meter board, Weber's score of 265.20 led DU.

Denison will return home next Saturday, Jan. 23 when they host Carnegie Mellon at 1 p.m.
