Box Score Denison scored four times and held the Purple Raiders to just six shots en route to a 4-0 shutout victory on Saturday afternoon at Barclay-Thomsen Field.
The Big Red wasted no time taking the lead as they manufactured a goal inside the first 90 seconds of play. Setting up for their second corner kick of the match, senior Andrea Witte floated a cross into the middle of the box that found the head of freshman forward Maggie Armstrong. Armstrong flicked the ball over Mount Union goalie Paige Freel to put the home team up 1-0. Her first-collegiate goal came at 1:27.
Exactly six minutes later, DU cashed in once again to double their lead over the Raiders. This time sophomore Meg Wozniak settled a cross from Anne Denz and ripped a shot through traffic into the lower right corner. Nine and a half minutes later, Wozniak add another insurance goal to extend the lead to 3-0. Witte set the table for Wozniak's second tally when she unloaded a shot that deflected off the goalie. The sophomore beat Freel to the ball and buried it into the back of the net at 16:57.
Denison outshot Mount Union 17-4 in the first half, including a 10-2 advantage in shots on frame. The Big Red also attempted five corners compared to just one for the Purple Raiders.
Like the first period, the Big Red dominated play in the second 45 minutes of action as they outshot their opponent 14-2. The lone goal of the half came in the 80th minute when Jacquie Graham settled a shot off the left post by Naomi Barker and sent the ball into the left side.
In addition to the offensive outburst, the starting backline of Drew Wentzel, Logan Berlet, Allison Vilsack and Sam Haseltine stifled the Mount Union offense for the majority of the match. Sophomore keeper Jenny Herold also made two saves en route to her first shutout of the season.
Wozniak's two goals came via four shots, while Armstrong and Graham combined for nine shots and two goals. Witte led the team with six attempts, while two of Vilsack's four shots were on goal.
Kelsey Malenic had two attempts for Mount, while Amy Bobonik and Hailee Brown each recorded a shot on net. Freel made six saves in 64 minutes, while Alexis Crawford stopped four shots in 26 minutes.
With the win, DU improves to 2-0 on the season, while Mount Union falls to 0-2. The Big Red returns to Barclay-Thomsen Field on Sunday (Sept. 6) when they host Hanover at 1 p.m.
