Box Score The 10th-ranked Denison women's soccer team kept their perfect record intact with a 5-0 victory over Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville, Ohio.
The Big Red dominated the Bishops in their North Coast Athletic Conference opener. Sophomore Meg Wozniak got DU on the board early with a goal in the 10th minute. Wozniak took a pass from Maggie Armstrong, setting up a 1-v-1 with the keeper. The sophomore dribbled into the box, one-touched the ball past the charging goalie and scored into a wide open net for her fifth goal of the season.
It didn't take long for Denison to add to its lead. Freshman Sam Haseltine sent a cross from the left side that was headed towards the goal by Ashlyn Flaherty. Keeper Mackenzie Brunke made a nice play to keep the ball out of the net, but the save sent Brunke into the goal while the ball ended up at the feet of Armstrong who chipped it to Anne Denz in the middle of the box. The junior settled the ball and ripped a shot into the right side of the goal from point blank range. Denz's first goal of the season came at 13 minute even.
Flaherty capped off the first-half scoring with an unassisted tally in the 28th minute. The junior settled a failed clear by Ohio Wesleyan, curled around Cat Mechler to create some space and blasted a shot into the lower left 90 for her second goal of the season.
The score remained 3-0 until the 57th minute when Jacquie Graham registered her first of two goals on the afternoon. Senior captain Logan Berlet sent a cross from along the end line that was one timed into the back of the goal by Graham.
Graham picked up her second goal nearly 10 minutes later, this time off a Wozniak pass. Wozniak sent a through ball to Graham who split two defenders which set up a 1-on-1 with backup keeper Rachel Charles. Like Wozniak's goal in the first, Graham stepped around the charging keeper and scored into a wide open goal.
The Big Red held a commanding 33-1 advantage in shots and had all six corners. Sophomore Jenny Herold needed to make just one stop to earn her ninth victory of the season. Denz led the team in shots with eight, while Wozniak and Flaherty each had five. That trio combined for three of DU's five goals. Graham's two goals came on four shots.
Denison improves to 9-0 on the season and 1-0 in NCAC play, while the Bishops fall to 1-7-1 and 0-1 in the league. The Big Red returns to action next Saturday when they host Hiram at 12 p.m. on Barclay-Thomsen Field.
