No. 10 DU overpowers Crusaders

Box Score

Three goals in the opening 14 minutes was enough cushion to power the 10th ranked Denison Big Red to a 6-1 win over Capital University in Bexley, Ohio.  The win moves Denison's record to a sparkling 8-0, marking the best start to a season since the 1999 squad opened the year with 16 consecutive wins.

The first shot of the match was taken by Madison Smith just two minutes into the match.  Her bomb from 20-yards went over the head of Crusader goalkeeper Kim Leitch to give DU a 1-0 lead.

Eight minutes later, Anne Denz sent a crossing pass into the box where Meg Wozniak received it and sent a shot into the left side of the goal.  In the 14th minute, less than four minutes after Wozniak's goal, Maggie Armstrong scored by beating the keeper with a shot from inside the 18-yard box.

Denison would take a 4-0 lead early in the second half when Logan Berlet served up a corner kick to Jessica Skelly who headed the ball into the goal.  Skelly would score again in the 90th minute off a deflection while Sam Haseltine would account for DU's fifth goal in the 67th minute.

Capital got one goal from Becca Cartmill in the 60th minute of play, spoiling Denison's bid for a sixth shutout.

Big Red goalkeeper Jenny Herold finished with seven saves while facing 13 shots.  Alexis Brand entered the match in the second half and played the final 36 minutes, posting two saves.

With the loss, Capital falls to 4-3.  Denison will put its 8-0 record on the line this Saturday, Sept. 26 when they host Ohio Wesleyan at 4 p.m.
