Box Score Logan Berlet provided the equalizer in the 32nd minute and the go-ahead goal in the 60th minute as Denison rallied for a 4-2 win over John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio.
The Big Red trailed the Blue Streaks 2-1 after a pair of first half goals by John Carroll's first-year forward, Bailey Fischer. That score would change when Berlet sent a ball into the zone from 35 yards out. What started as a crossing pass by Berlet would end up curling into the Blue Streaks' goal, tying the match at 2-2.
After the intermission, JCU's Danielle Sharbaugh attempted a free kick in the 57th minute that sailed over the Big Red's goal, keeping the score deadlocked at 2-2. One minute later, Berlet came up from her right-back position and ripped a shot from just inside the 18-yard box. Her shot would get by goalkeeper Rhhianna Guarnera, giving Denison its first lead of the contest.
That Denison lead was nearly short lived because one minute after Berlet's goal, John Carroll's Haley Vinborg got free on a breakaway. Denison goalkeeper Jenny Herold made the decision to come out of the box and challenge Vinborg. Herold's gamble paid off as her sliding save in front of Vinborg prevented what would have been a likely goal for the home team.
With just over 10 minutes to play in the match, JCU was flagged for a hand ball foul resulting in a Denison free kick from just outside the box. Denison's Drew Wentzel would convert the free kick and set the final at 4-2.
Denison (1-0) attempted 27 shots to John Carroll's 11. Ten of Denison's 27 shots were on-goal while six of JCU's attempts were sent on frame. Herold finished with four saves while playing all 90 minutes. Guarnera posted six stops in 90 minutes of action.
Berlet paced Denison with two goals, marking the second multi-goal match of her career. Wentzel scored on her only shot attempt while DU's first goal would come from Jessica Skelly off a pass from Andrea Witte in the 22nd minute. Three of Denison's four goals on Wednesday came from defenders.
The Big Red will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 5 when they host Mount Union at 1 p.m. from Barclay-Thomsen Field.
